COPYRIGHT YOUR EXPERTISE

You've spent years developing your expertise. Your unique point of view and the value you create for your clients has made you the go-to person in your niche.

How do you make sure that competitors aren't stealing your stuff?

Contrary to popular belief, it isn't with a trademark. It is with copyright registration.

The copyright in a work of authorship is protected from the moment it is created, provided that the work is original and is fixed in a tangible medium of expression.

In other words, the copyright in a work of original authorship exists regardless of whether or not the work has been registered with the Copyright Office.

However, if you want to be able to enforce your rights against infringers, you must register it.

What does this mean?

The application fee to register a copyright is relatively inexpensive ($65 compared to $350+ for a trademark), and it is possible to DIY the registration.

The US Copyright Office provides lots of tutorials and instructions to complete the application process.

However, There are a number of questions you will need to answer, primarily about the "copyrightability" of your work.

  • Is it original?

  • Is it sufficiently creative?

  • Is it a work-for-hire?

  • Are any pre-existing materials included? If so, are they registered?

  • Which parts are you claiming ownership of, and which are you excluding?

  • What to do about materials that are based in whole or in part on AI?

And, you will need to certify that the information included in the application is accurate.

That's where Copyright Your Expertise comes in.
