Scaling Starts With What You Stop Doing

Profit follows focus. Start by cutting what no longer fits.

When we talk about scaling an expertise-based business, most of us jump to doing more:

More marketing. More lead gen. More offers. More systems.

But what if the real power comes from knowing what NOT to do?

In a recent conversation with Liz Wolfe (Scaling Expertise podcast, Ep. 109), we explored the mindset shift that many founder-led businesses miss:

Profit is about alignment between what you offer, what it costs you (in time and energy, not just dollars), and whether your systems are actually built for where you are right now.

For example:

  • Buying into expensive tools or platforms because they promise scale—but your business isn’t ready to use them.

  • Refusing to outsource low-leverage tasks because you’re trying to “save money”… while spending your most valuable resource (your brainpower) on admin work.

  • Listening to generic business advice that worked for someone else, in a different industry, with a different model—and wondering why it doesn’t work for you.

Sound familiar?

Here’s the bottom line: Scaling isn’t just about growth. It’s about focus.

That means:

  • Stop investing in complexity before you have the clarity.

  • Stop doing everything yourself just because you can.

  • Stop assuming that what worked for someone else is automatically your answer too.

Liz put it beautifully:
“Everybody has an answer. Is it the right answer for you?”

That’s the real work—figuring out the answer that aligns with your values, your capacity, and your business model.

I’ll leave you with this question:

What’s one thing you’re doing in your business that you’ve outgrown—but you haven’t let go of yet?

It could be a service you no longer enjoy delivering, a task that drains your energy, or a mindset that no longer serves you—but still shapes your decisions.
